Tyler Goodjohn is a professional boxer from Ely. He won the English super-lightweight title on a majority decision over Ricky Boylan, but unfortunately came short when fighting for the WBC international title. Since that loss he has taken some time out of the ring, but is now making a return at welterweight.
What made you start boxing?
I started boxing to lose weight and no other reason to be honest. As a 10 year old I was quite overweight and struggled with my fitness, especially in sports like football which I really enjoyed so my parents sent me to Haddenham ABC.
Which fight would you say is the highlight of your career?
I think people would expect me to say winning the English Title against Ricky Boylan, but it would have to be the third fight against Danny Connor which meant the most to me. I’d been chasing redemption for about a year or so since losing the 2nd fight and I needed to reverse the defeat to move on with my career. After the 2nd fight I was let go by my then trainer Tony Sims as he didn’t believe I was a title level fighter I was only 20-21 at the time so you can imagine it was a huge blow to my confidence, but I knew I would get my revenge. Danny moved down to light welterweight and won the southern area title so I decided to follow him down to the weight had a couple of fights got myself in a position to fight him and took full advantage. Going into the fight I felt a huge amount of pressure and emotion because this was the fight I wanted and had talked about for so long and I had so much too prove to myself and others… and I did!
What is your main title aim and how long do you think it will take to achieve it?
My aim going into the Professional game was to be British champion, but now I have the chance to be 2 weight English champion and that would mean the absolute world to me. With that I could live the rest of my life a very happy man especially with all the twists and turns my career has had already, but every fighter wants that Lonsdale belt deep down.
What do you feel are your main strengths?
My main strength is my heart and determination but that also gets me into trouble as well, I would walk through walls if I had to ,honestly pain ,blood & an ugly face doesn’t bother me! My pride overtakes my boxing brain far too often which in turn makes me lose my way in fights I need to stick to my boxing much more.
Who would you most like the opportunity to fight?
Whoever. That’s not me being big-headed, I might not always win against the top boys, but I will always give 110%. The fans will go away entertained & with value for money and my opponent will have been in an absolute tear up!
What fight(s) would you like to see happen at world level in your division?
Goodjohn Vs Maidana! Mayweather Vs Khan I honestly think Khan has the speed and combination punching to trouble Mayweather.
Where do you see yourself and what do you want to have achieved in a year from now?
2 weight English Champ! Surprising and entertaining people along the way and getting the chance to win more belts for my daughter, who will be born in June.
